What to do in the Lan ...

Let's be honest: when we picture the Landes region, we immediately think of surfing sessions in Hossegor, bike rides under the pine trees, or lazy afternoons on the fine sandy beaches. But sometimes, the weather has other plans, and the Landes sky turns grey...

Don't panic! Don't let a few drops of rain ruin your vacation. Rain is the perfect opportunity to discover another side of the region, a more intimate, cultural, and culinary one. The Landes is full of hidden gems sheltered from the rain.

Put on your raincoat (or keep your umbrella handy): the Landes Guide has put together a selection of unmissable outings to transform a rainy day into a memorable experience. Follow the guide!

Immerse yourself in culture: Must-see museums

When the rain arrives, it's the perfect opportunity to visit the museums of the Landes region. Far from the clichés, they offer interactive tours that appeal to all generations.

Most of these museums offer activity booklets or treasure hunts for children. At the Seaplane Museum, for example, workshops allow younger visitors to understand how these "giants of the sea" manage to take off!

Discover Brassempouy: A journey through time (while staying dry)

If there is one place not to be missed in Chalosse, it is the Brassempouy Prehistoric Site. It is here that the famous Lady with the Hood was discovered, a tiny ivory statuette 30,000 years old.

The site is perfectly equipped for rainy days:

  • The Lady's House: a modern museum space that exhibits the archaeological discoveries of the site.
  • The demonstrations: under covered structures, passionate guides show you how our ancestors made fire or knapped flint. You quickly forget the raindrops because the show is so captivating!

During school holidays, the site organizes prehistoric sculpture and painting workshops. Your children can leave with their own piece of cave art or a small soapstone Venus. Remember to book online, these activities are very popular! We've tried them all for you!

Participate in activities to keep you entertained

Rain is also the time when the Landes region comes alive indoors. Many venues offer scheduled activities:

  • Escape Games and Indoor Leisure Activities : More and more towns like Capbreton, Saint-Paul-lès-Dax, and Biscarrosse are offering themed escape rooms. It's the perfect activity to test teamwork with family or friends.
  • Creative workshops : keep an eye on media libraries and cultural centers which often organize storytelling sessions, digital workshops or lectures on rainy afternoons.
  • Cinemas : it's the perfect time to go see the latest movie or the latest trendy cartoon to please both young and old.

Relaxing in the warmth: A wellness break

If there is one department where rain is the perfect excuse to take care of yourself, it is this one! A land of thermalism par excellence, the Landes is full of balneotherapy centers and spas where you instantly forget the outside humidity.

  • The ultimate relaxation destination in Saint-Paul-lès-Dax: the Sourcéo center is the place to be. With its indoor stone pools, jacuzzis, waterfalls, and massage jets, you can immerse yourself in naturally warm water. The spa also offers complete treatment rituals for total relaxation.
  • A marine atmosphere in Labenne: further south, the Dune & Eau center in Labenne Océan is a true haven of tranquility. People come for its 32°C aqua-relaxation area and its treatments inspired by the benefits of the ocean.

SPA

While most spas are reserved for adults or accompanied teenagers (16 or 18 years old and up), Sourcéo welcomes children as young as 3. It's the perfect compromise for little ones to have fun in the water while their parents enjoy the whirlpools!

Go on a shopping spree combining fashion and local produce.

Rain is often the perfect excuse for a shopping break. Whether you're looking for the latest trendy item or delicious souvenirs, the Landes region offers options for all tastes, safely sheltered from the rain.

  • Take advantage of the bad weather to explore factory outlets and workshops. It's the perfect time to try on a pair of famous espadrilles or find some quality Basque-Landes linens.
  • On the Landes coast, many concept stores and surf shops offer spacious and stylish interiors where you can browse clothes, decor and often have a dry coffee.
  • For food lovers, head to the covered markets and market halls (like those in Dax or Mont-de-Marsan). It's the perfect place to fill your basket with local produce: foie gras, Armagnac, Landes pastis or asparagus from the Sables, while chatting with local producers.
  • For an "all-in-one" experience, shopping areas offer vast covered galleries with numerous fashion, leisure and dining brands.
