The museum of figurative sculpture
Nearly two hundred sculptures are presented in the permanent rooms of the museum, in the heart of the Lacataye "Donjon". This set crosses the history of 20th century French sculpture with "independent sculpture" as the common thread.
This artistic movement was created at the dawn of the 20th century by a group of sculptors, heirs of Auguste Rodin. Gathered around the Schnegg brothers, they formulate an artistic proposal, focused on the human figure, reinterpreting ancient art to approach its ideal of calm, serenity and counting.
This movement, attached to the respect of human values, persisted throughout the 20th century.
These sculptors, whose mastery and technical rigor we immediately admire, have marked the history of sculpture with their works.
The route, organized around the Mons artists Charles Despiau (1874-1946) and Robert Wlérick (1882-1844) , members of the "Bande à Schnegg", offers a discovery of this artistic production, with in particular a unique set of works from sculpted programs of international inter-war exhibitions.
Beyond the homogeneity and stylistic coherence of such an ensemble, it is its rarity and its historical interest that must be emphasized. Today, the Despiau-Wlérick museum is a real reference in the field of 20th century French sculpture.
