Directions PréhistoSite of Brassempouy - An archaeological theme park and a prehistoric site in the Landes region

About

  • English
    • A museum, an archaeological theme park and a prehistoric site

The museum displays archaeological remains discovered at the archaeological site of the Pope's caves, such as ornaments, engravings, prehistoric animal bones and casts of statuettes discovered in Brassempouy and Europe.

Several guided tours are offered daily, including tours suitable for children (ages 6 and up). During these tours, discover the history of these caves, inhabited for nearly 30,000 years by our ancestors. Also discover the story of the collection's most famous statuette, the Lady with the Hood (housed at the Saint-Germain-en-Laye Archaeological Museum), the Mona Lisa of Prehistory, known as the oldest known representation of a human face.

Continue your immersion in the ArchéoParc, where every day the mediators present demonstrations of flint knapping and fire lighting, and also introduce you to prehistoric hunting !

Discover the environment and animals of the Ice Age with habitat and animal recreations and real live aurochs!

The archaeological site of the Pope's Caves is open to visitors ( by reservation only ). We offer two tour options, from April to September :

      • One with quick access (by vehicle) (1/week - 3/week in summer)
      • The other is via the cave trail (Hiking - 7 km - 1/week - in summer 2/week)
