Dax Cathedral, also known as Sainte-Marie, is an iconic building in the heart of the city. Although its construction dates back in part to the 17th century, it was built on the foundations of an earlier Gothic cathedral that collapsed in 1646. From this period, only one remarkable vestige remains: the Portal of the Apostles, a richly sculpted 13th-century ogival portal and one of the rare examples of Gothic art in the region. The architecture of the current cathedral is more classical in style, but it harmoniously integrates this historical element.
Inside, Dax Cathedral is home to some real treasures. Visitors can admire the high altar made of marble in different colors, as well as a majestic organ and a large organ case, considered one of the most beautiful in France. The cathedral is also home to several paintings, including works by Flemish and Dutch masters. This architectural and artistic ensemble, listed as a historic monument, makes the cathedral an essential place of worship and culture for residents and visitors to the city.
