Abbey of Sorde Discover over a thousand years of history in Sorde-l'Abbaye

In the heart of a village in the southern Landes region, discover a former Benedictine abbey located on the banks of a river in a protected natural setting. A visit to this unique site offers some wonderful surprises!

Founded in the Middle Ages and remodeled until the French Revolution, Sorde Abbey reveals its history and architecture through restorations and archaeological excavations. You can admire the Roman mosaics that decorated the floors of a luxurious ancient villa buried beneath the abbey. The monumental ruins of the monastic buildings shelter a majestic terrace overlooking the Gave d'Oloron, beneath which is hidden an astonishing cryptoporticus : this long underground gallery connected to a pier offers an experience a unique and unforgettable visit.

Sorde Abbey is classified as a Historic Monument and included on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Routes of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle in France.

It is open to the public from April to November.

THE UNUSUAL VISIT: Trobairitz , a sound trail created for the abbey which tells the story and sets to music the hidden life of Beatrice de Die, a troubadour woman (listen with headphones in 3D sound - equipment provided - by reservation)
