Church of Saint-Saturnin in Brassempouy A historical monument not to be missed in the Landes region

Classified as a Historical Monument since 1939, the Romanesque-Gothic church of Brassempouy dates from the beginning of the 12th century.
A military defensive tower was added to it in the 13th century. It was heightened in the 14th century. The church was further modified a century later with the construction of two side chapels and the stone spire that crowns the top of the tower, a jewel of Flamboyant Gothic architecture.

In the 16th century, a stone vault —asymmetrical to accommodate the offset of the chapels— was built. All the keystones are decorated. Of particular note is the presence of a pendant keystone —a very rare feature— depicting a scroll-bearing angel with folded wings.

After these major works, particular attention was paid to the furnishings. In the 18th century, a very colourful wood-paneled decoration was installed in the choir.

In the 19th century, stained glass windows and an original plaster Stations of the Cross were added to embellish the church.

You can also admire the white marble altar, which was donated to the parish at the beginning of the 20th century. It depicts Christ surrounded by the four evangelists.

Finally, at the level of the stands, a small door was perhaps reserved for the Cagots. The term "Cagots" refers to outcasts, victims of numerous forms of discrimination, whose origins remain poorly understood and whose population was concentrated in southwestern France.

The restoration work, which began a few years ago, is finally complete. The Church of Saint-Saturnin in Brassempouy has now regained its splendor!

The church is open every day, from 9am to 7pm (audio-guided tour).
Guided tours of the village and church are offered all year round for groups of 10 people minimum.
