Crypte de Saint Girons Abbeys, Churches, Priories in Hagetmau

The crypt of Saint-Girons, located in the Landes region, is a jewel of Romanesque art and a rare example of medieval religious architecture in the region.

Built in the 11th century, it is distinguished by its Greek cross-shaped structure and barrel vaults. One of its most remarkable features is its sculpted decoration. These include capitals decorated with plant motifs, fantastical animals and biblical scenes, as well as a fresco depicting a majestic Christ surrounded by the symbols of the four evangelists. These sculptures and wall paintings, although partially damaged, offer a fascinating insight into the religious iconography of the period.
