Nestled on a hill in the Landes region, prepare yourself for a journey through time and into the heart of nature during your visit to the Château de Gaujacq. This 17th-century architectural gem is certainly a stately home, but it is above all a haven of peace where history blends with exceptional flora.

Guided by the master of the house, your journey will take you from the interiors of this castle inspired by Italian palaces to vast panoramas of the Pyrenees. Savor every moment of this unique experience, combining culture, history and botany.

The Landes Guide likes to arrive well before the excursions to enjoy the peace and quiet of the area. This is what we did for this new experience. The tour starts at 11:10 a.m. and we arrive at 10:30 a.m.

We take the time to admire its majestic facade. It is a 17th-century stately home whose architecture is directly inspired by Italian palaces. Surrounded by greenery, the castle stands proudly before us.

Then, the natural spectacle operates from the first steps near the building. Perched on the heights, it is the ideal place to contemplate an exceptional panorama. In the distance, we see the Pyrenees mountain range and the rolling landscapes of Chalosse. It is a perfect moment to take photos and soak up the beauty of the site.

Through a closed gate, you can see the Gaujacq Plantarium. It houses one of the largest collections of camellias in Europe. This "camellia garden" is a trail of about a kilometer that blooms from autumn to spring.

The guided tour

After waiting for a video retracing the history of the place, it is time for visitors and the Landes Guide to finally discover this castle with our own eyes. It is Philippe, the owner of the Château de Gaujacq, who gives us the guided tour. This immersion is as personal as it is enriching, because we dive with him into the past. For more than an hour and a half, he tells us the history of the place and the family who lives there. We drink in his words.

In his company, we explore the sumptuous apartments of the 17th and 18th centuries, where time seems to have stood still. Each room is a living testimony to the art of living of these eras. Admire the refined interiors, adorned with delicate woodwork, painted panels and period furniture that tell a story on every corner of the wall.

The real highlight of this visit lies in the anecdotes and secrets that the owner loves to share. Far from a simple enumeration of historical facts, these are family stories, adventures and intimate details that make the castle more expressive than ever. Pay attention to these stories, because they transform the simple discovery of the place into a human and memorable encounter.

The House of Chanel has occupied the premises for several years, because it is here, at the Plantarium, that the camellia, Coco Chanel's emblematic flower, is cultivated.

The tour will also take you to the garden at the center of the castle, a lush interior courtyard. The latter, with its large exotic trees and rare plants, embodies the owners' passion for botany. It constitutes a true haven of peace in the very heart of the residence, offering a unique perspective on the building's architecture.

The Gaujacq Plantarium

Once the interior tour is over, the exploration continues outside with the Plantarium. Welcome to a plant conservatory that extends across the castle grounds.

Take the time to stroll through this exceptional botanical garden, home to more than 3,000 species and varieties of plants. It is a paradise for botany enthusiasts and a source of wonder for all. Don't miss the famous Camellia Garden, which houses an impressive collection of camellias. This unique place combines the beauty of nature with a scientific approach, making your walk a fascinating discovery.
