Peyrehorade Towns and Villages in Peyrehorade

Peyrehorade was created in the Middle Ages between the Gaves and the Aspremont hill where the ruins of the old castle of the Viscounts of Orthe stand. The city has benefited from its crossroads location, between the Landes, the Béarn and the Basque Country, to develop, like its market created in 1358.

Replacing the Aspremont fortress, the imposing Orthe castle, built in the 15th century on the banks of the Gaves, constitutes the southern entrance to the city. It now houses the services of the town hall.

A large Jewish community, fleeing the Inquisition, settled in the city in the 17th century as evidenced by the presence of 3 Jewish cemeteries.

Since 2024, the town of Peyrehorade has been France's kiwifruit capital.
