Biscarrosse: 3 good reasons to go there!

Imagine a small town nestled between two lakes, the ocean and surrounded by pine forests... Magnificent, isn't it? Well, this town is Biscarrosse ! It's a superb place to discover with family, as a couple or with friends. During our getaway, we were surprised by the number of activities to do in these places: museums, sports activities, gastronomic experiences... We loved Biscarrosse and we give you 3 good reasons to go there too!

Marvel at the Seaplane Museum

Whether you are an expert or not, the seaplane museum will not leave you unmoved. It is the one and only museum in Europe dedicated to seaplanes. These planes can take off and land on the water. But why such a museum in this location? Pierre-Georges Latécoère, an emblematic figure in the beginning of aviation, chose Biscarrosse for the assembly and testing of his machines. Ideally located to imagine the crossing of the Atlantic, there are many lakes in the surrounding area which are protected from the winds by the dunes. Biscarrosse has thus become a strategic location for seaplanes.

Thanks to the explanations given in the museum, the models, archive posters, etc., we really take a leap back in time, to the era when we dreamed of “ flying ocean liners in the sky.” One part is also devoted to the Canadairs, another to the beginnings of airmail, aviation during the wars, etc. Everything is very well explained and the sounds in the different rooms allow us to immerse ourselves in the atmosphere. Children will be delighted to discover superb models and operate devices to understand how the machines work.

The last building is a hangar that houses dozens of aircraft, including the world's first flying boat. If you visit this museum, don't hesitate to exchange a few words with the staff who will be happy to share their knowledge with a constant smile. They told us that many of the exhibits were found in Lake Biscarrosse and that there must surely be many treasures at the bottom of the water.

We also loved the shop which offers not just tourist items, but books, bags and even very high quality posters related to aviation and its history.

After visiting this museum, we only have one desire: to get on a plane and admire the lakes, the forest and the sea from the sky !

Enjoy the good Landes gastronomy

In the Southwest of France, we eat very well and this is even more true in the Landes ! There are many small producers and the specialties are so appetizing.

• It's impossible to talk about the Landes without mentioning fatty duck. Foie gras, confits, duck breasts, rillettes... These delicacies are the heart of Landes cuisine. Their quality is certified by labels such as the Label Rouge or the IGP Canard à foie gras du Sud-Ouest.
• Chalosse beef, also under PGI, is a meat of exceptional tenderness and flavor. Raised in accordance with tradition, this beef is a source of local pride.
• On the sweet side, pastis landais is the star. No, it has nothing to do with the aniseed drink! It's a brioche flavored with vanilla, rum, and orange blossom. Perfect for breakfast or a snack. Tourtière landaise, a thin apple and Armagnac tart, is another delicacy not to be missed.
• Finally, the Landes is a land of winegrowers. Tursan wine, white, red or rosé, as well as the sand wine of the IGP des Sables de l'Océan appellation, are typical wines of the department.

Enjoy the fine sandy beaches

According to the Landes Guide, the beaches of Biscarrosse are among the most beautiful beaches in the Landes. They stretch as far as the eye can see, the sand is very fine and the sand dune offers a magnificent view when you are on the beach.

There's always something to do here: walk for miles along the beach, do a bit of shopping in the shopping streets, swim in the beautiful waves. However, the main activity practiced by tourists and locals alike is surfing !

If waves scare you a little and you prefer a peaceful spot, head to the lakes ! There are plenty of them in the area and they are perfect for family fun.
