Abbaye d'Arthous

The Abbey of Arthous honors its origins and its collections which gave birth to the museum. The exceptional sculptures of prehistoric horses discovered in the 1960s in the neighboring town of Sorde-l'Abbaye, of which it is the depositary, are the subject of an exhibition of photographs and a new space for enhancement: the "Treasure room".

Considered the jewels of the departmental collection, the three horse sculptures from the Abri Duruthy in Sorde-l'Abbaye, attributed to the Middle Magdalenian and dated around 17,000 years before the present, are exhibited in the old chapel deprived of the abbot. The scenography, which brings together original works and contemporary photographs, invites emotion to better understand these masterpieces of Palaeolithic portable art.

Arthous Abbey is open:

• From April 1 to April 30 from 2 p.m. to 5.30 p.m.
• From June 1 to September 30 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

• From October 1 to November 15 from 2 p.m. to 5.30 p.m.
• Closed Mondays, May 1, November 1 and 11.

• "Ichtus" by Daniel Mestanza - exhibition from June 18 to October 16
The exhibition “Ichtus” (fish – Christian symbol of Antiquity) is composed of a myriad of luminous and moving fish suspended in the air. This staging is accompanied by a sound immersion to stimulate our senses.
A stroll in the heart of a dreamlike and hypnotic world, a return to contemplation and meditation, an enchanted parenthesis!

• Conference "Discovery and study of whale bones in our archaeological collections!" Sunday June 19 at 3 p.m. - Sunday June 19 at 3 p.m.
Jean-Marc Petillon, Director of the “PaleoCet” research program, presents the archaeological remains of marine origin. These contribute to a better knowledge of cetacean species and ways of life in our territory during the Paleolithic.

Paleogeneticist Ludovic Orlando presents the latest archaeogenetic analyzes carried out on horse remains from Duruthy (Sorde-l'Abbaye) as part of the international Pegasus research program.
