    • Nestled in an exceptional and green setting at the crossroads of the Landes, the Basque Country and Béarn, the Abbey of Arthous has known many lives and vicissitudes. Founded in the 12th century by Premonstratensian canons who lived there until the Revolution, the Abbey was transformed into a farm before becoming a Historic Monument and Museum of France. The quality of its Romanesque decor, its corbels and capitals of fantastic animals, biblical or profane characters, and its plant motifs are at the origin of the salvage of the Abbey and its remarkable conservation.

Open to the public from April to November, the Abbey of Arthous invites you to discover the stories carved in its stone, its legendary bestiary, its cells and treasures, and to learn about the general history of the site... Each season, new temporary exhibitions occupy the Sainte-Marie d'Arthous church and invite the visitor to raise their eyes to its beautiful frame with harmonious dimensions.

A high place of heritage. A parenthesis out of time.

      AGENDA 2023:

      • "Once upon a time Arthous" – permanent exhibition
Presented in the former cells of the canons, the exhibition recounts 800 years of the monument's history.

      • The "treasure room" – permanent exhibition
Three horse sculptures dating from prehistoric times discovered a few kilometers from the abbey by archaeologist Robert Arambourou have found their setting in Arthous. Considered the jewels of the departmental collection, these approximately 17,000-year-old masterpieces include the largest Magdalenian sculpture currently known. Note the finesse of the lines and the remarkable preservation.
