Today we are going on a getaway to the pretty town of Dax. On the agenda: sunshine, lively pedestrian streets and of course thermal water! For a relaxing and enjoyable weekend, this is the ideal place where Landes culture and thermal spas blend together...

First stop: Hot Fountain Square

The Hot Fountain Dax
The Hot Fountain

It is impossible to walk around the town of Dax without stopping by the Nèhe spring, goddess of waters. This impressive complex was built above ancient Roman baths. It is also a true symbol of the region's thermalism. For the curious, it is possible to approach and touch this sacred water. Be careful, it is hot, very hot. This water is naturally at a temperature of 64°C, hence the name of this spring.

The market is held every Saturday and Sunday morning on Place de la Fontaine Chaude. Other lovely markets are located on Place Camille Bouvet and Place Roger Ducos. You'll enjoy a stroll through the Fontaine Chaude district. It's lively and colourful, with lovely terraces full of locals and tourists enjoying the sunshine.

A pampering afternoon in a spa center

Like all major cities in the Southwest, Dax is known for its summer ferias. In Dax, they take place in mid-August and attract partygoers from all over France. The rest of the year, it is another type of tourism that attracts visitors: wellness tourism.

Did you know that the Landes region is France's leading spa region ? Between Dax and Saint-Paul-et-Dax, no fewer than 16 spas are open. The oldest, Les Bains Saint-Pierre, dates back to 1855 and is located right next to the Gallo-Roman ramparts.

Make no mistake, the treatments are open to everyone and can treat many pathologies including rheumatism, circulation problems, but also provide an opportunity to recharge and relax for a long or short stay, or even for a few hours. Sounds tempting, doesn't it?

But what makes this region so popular with spa visitors? First of all, there is its water, known for its many therapeutic properties. Then there is its mud, called peloid, which is unique in France. Finally, there is know-how developed since Roman times.

After a "very difficult" afternoon of being massaged and pampered, it's time to put on our best clothes for an evening of entertainment at the Casino de Dax.

Sunday: stroll through the pedestrian streets and cultural visits

A short stroll through the streets of Dax

Strolling through the city, you will discover pleasant pedestrian streets and superb monuments. It is difficult to remain indifferent to the impressive Notre-Dame Cathedral and its pretty square. In the shade of the trees, there is a statue of a man and his dog, referring to the history of the city. According to legend, a Roman legionary wanted to drown his dog, which was suffering from rheumatism (how funny...). The dog came out healthier than ever, and this is how the properties of this thermal water were discovered.
