Friendliness, fresh fish and proximity to Capbreton

Enjoy, in the heart of this authentic market, the incomparable freshness of the seasonal fish on the stalls of the fishermen. Twice a day, and depending on availability, they offer you, for direct sale, the fish caught in their net during the day.

Welcome to the Capbreton fish market!

The peculiarity of this market is that the fishermen do not go through an auction to sell the results of their daily fishing. They are therefore free to set their prices since there is no intermediary between them and you! This lack of intermediary allows them to offer you seafood at the best price...

The professionals provide good advice and will be able to guide you in choosing the fish according to your tastes. They will not hesitate to prepare them for you: to scale them, to empty them, to lift the fillets… nor to guide you on the best ways to cook and enhance them, to make the most of the benefits they offer you.

Freshwater sailors or sailors on the open sea?

There are a lot of fishing possibilities in the Landes department, in particular thanks to its Atlantic coast, but also thanks to the presence of numerous lakes and ponds (fr). But the Capbretonnais sailors that you will meet in the market practice their activity in the open sea. The techniques are different according to the fishermen, the season and the type of fish:

  • Sailors who use nets are gillnetters or trawlers (depending on the net),
  • those who fish with traps are called caseyeurs,
  • those who fish with lines are linemen.

Formerly famous for whaling, sailors have had to adapt and diversify their technique so that their activity continues despite the disappearance of cetaceans in our territorial waters.

Seasonality is important in fish, so you will not always find all species on vendor stalls. But, to give you some indications, local fishing allows you to taste sea bream, turbo, sole, sea bass, hake, scorpion fish, and many other varieties.

    Useful information

The Capbreton fish market is open 365 days a year (except special weather conditions), from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. then from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. , depending on arrival of course!

You can park a few steps from the market and then walk there, taking the direction of the ocean.

If you continue on your way, you will find a sublime beach with golden sand. Take the opportunity to walk on the Capbreton pier, this large wooden pontoon, to the lighthouse.
